Your backlog is long. Your evenings aren’t.

The Backlog Brief helps you decide which games are worth your limited time: how long they really take, what they’re worth, and what to play next.

Every shelf has one game that deserves your next evening. We help you find it.

Why The Backlog Brief exists

Most gaming coverage tells you what’s new. Very little tells you what’s worth it if you have a job, a family, or only a few free hours a week. Meanwhile the backlog keeps growing: sale purchases, subscription downloads, free giveaways, and games you started and never finished.

We started The Backlog Brief in 2026 to be the site you check before you buy, download, or start a game. Our job is simple: give you a clear, honest answer about whether a game fits the time you actually have.

What we cover

We focus on the decision, not the walkthrough. Every article answers a question you have before you commit your time.

  • Is it worth it?

Clear verdicts on value: what a game gives you for the time and money it asks.

  • How long to beat

Realistic playtime for a normal pace, including main story and completionist runs.

  • Short games

Great games you can finish in a few sittings. Start with our guide to the best short games sorted by evenings.

  • What to play next

Recommendations based on what you just finished and how much time you have.

  • Backlog strategy

Practical ways to sort, trim, and actually finish the games you already own.

We count in evenings, not just hours

A “15-hour game” means something very different if you play for an hour after dinner than if you have a free weekend. Hours on a chart don’t match real life.

So wherever we can, we translate playtime into evenings: the number of realistic sessions it takes to see a game through. Our How We Review page explains exactly how we calculate it.

Hours tell you length.

Useful, but it ignores how and when you actually play.

Evenings tell you commitment.

How many nights this game will take from your week, and whether that’s worth it to you.

How every article is made

Every article we publish is researched and analyzed by our team. Here is the process each one goes through.

  1. Research

We gather the facts that affect your decision: playtime, price, platforms, and what has changed through updates since launch.

  2. Analysis

We turn that research into a direct answer to one question: is this game worth your time, and for whom?

  3. Editorial check

Before publishing, each article is checked against our editorial policy for accuracy, clarity, and fairness.

  4. Updates and corrections

Games change after release, so we revisit our articles. When we get something wrong, we fix it openly under our corrections policy.

Our commitments to you

  • Verdicts are not for sale

No publisher or developer can pay for a better verdict, a higher ranking, or a place in our recommendations.

  • Money is disclosed

The site is supported by advertising and may use affiliate links. Our disclaimer explains how.

  • We show our reasoning

We explain why we reached a verdict, so you can decide whether it applies to you.

  • We fix mistakes in the open

If you spot an error, tell us. Corrections are made promptly and noted on the article.
